GCLG: a little background • Group of college librarians representing 8 FE Colleges in Glasgow • Originally formed in 1998 as the Library and Information Access Group of the Glasgow Telecolleges Network (GTN) • Major focus of the group was the Next Generation Library project which procured the Horizon LMS • Meets every 6 weeks to pursue collaborative agenda • Collaborative staff development is a high priority of the group

  3. Why staff development? • To raise awareness among staff • To develop staff skills • To develop the service • To try to ensure consistent services and standards across the Glasgow College Libraries • To help meet the expectations of “instant expert syndrome” • Learning by doing and sharing the experience

  4. Project: Horizon training • Horizon module training materials were poor and more akin to workshop materials than detailed instructions and procedures • GCLG produced Horizon module training materials for staff which were more targeted to meet our needs

  5. Project: Cataloguing • Using shared Horizon databases demanded upgrade of bibliographic records to MARC 21 standard • Demanded consistency of practice • This required staff training • GCLG metadata sub-group produced standard templates by format • Training in cataloguing & metadata conducted

  9. Project: Online Study Skills • Pooled existing study skills materials from colleges • Created “College Library Information Skills” • Created online resource “Research & Study Skills” using Course Genie which can be uploaded to any College VLE • Distributed this resource to all Colleges and uploaded to GCLG Hub • Able to advise colleagues on creating similar online resources
