  5. AUTONOMIC PERIOD • Jordi Pujol (President of Catalonia 1980-2003, father of the homeland and national symbol). • 7 years of left-nationalist coalition government. • Artur Mas (Current president of Catalonia) victory in 2010 • Promise new fiscal relation with Spain.

  6. DEMONSTRATION 11.09.2012 • 1,500,000 people (historic record) • Held in Barcelona • National Day of Catalonia • “Catalonia next state in Europe” • Madrid refuses to negotiate for a new fiscal system.

New elections (November 2012) • Independentist and pro-referendum parties are majority in the Catalan Parliament. • Compromise between the two main parties (CIU and ERC) to organize a referendum in 2014. • Time to start negotiations with Madrid • Social majority in favor of becoming a new state and overwhelming majority in favor of celebrating a referendum.
