  2. CHECKS AND BALANCES • It was set up so one branch did not have to much power • Branches are able to check and limit the power of others • President has checks. He can veto or reject a bill congress proposed to keep it from becoming a law • Congress can ride over veto • Supreme court can decide meaning of laws and declare them going against the constitution

  3. FEDERALISM • System of government in which the power to govern is shared between the national government and the states • Farmers believed the best way to get the government not to abuse power was to divide it • Spread authority in several different ways • Divide the power between the national and state government • Sharing of power between levels of government • Citizens have political obligations to the authorities • Center power (national gov.) has a defense and foreign policy
