    1. Yr 12 Information Night Assumption College Kilmore Tuesday 14th August

    2. HOW MANY DAYS TO GO? 38 days of classes are left for Year 12’s.

    3. WHAT SHOULD THE YEAR 12’S BE DOING AT THE MOMENT? They still have on going assessment in all subjects. They should be reading and preparing for these tasks. They could read the VCE reports in the newspapers - Herald Sun & Age. 30 minutes of homework per subject per night. Commence revision for the final examinations NOW.

    4. HOW DOES SPECIAL PROVISION WORK? There are four forms of Special Provision for the VCE STUDENT PROGRAMS SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT SPECIAL EXAMINATION ARRANGEMENTS DERIVED EXAMINATION SCORES

    6. HOW TO APPLY FOR SPECIAL PROVISION? Students must come and see Mr. Rovetto. They need to fill out a form outlining what the problem is, how it has affected them and what subjects/tasks have been affected? Special Provision is awarded by the school in with consultation with SWC, teachers and Principal

    7. WHAT IS AN “SEAS” FORM? Filled out by students on-line. Two types: Access & Equity, and Special Consideration This form gives students the opportunity to tell the selection officers about their hardship and how it affected their studies during Year 12 and earlier years.

    11. Open Days The calendar for these can be found: - at the Career’s icon on the Intranet - on the calendar on the window in the study room -on the VTAC website. It is a good idea to attend as many of these as you can in order to get all the information you need about courses, accommodation, selection procedures and fees.

    13. VTAC Guide 2008 The VTAC Guide is an essential resource and must be referred to during the whole application and selection period. ie. July 2007 to February 2008. Most sections are relevant and should be read accordingly. Students were also given a summary document with their VTAC guide

    14. Vital Information found on pages 1-28 in the VTAC Guide. This is a very important section. These pages contain information on: Definitions of words used in the guide Definition of application & pin number Cost of processing your application Cost of University fees Deferment process

    15. APPLICATION- on line only Closing date for Application – is Friday 28th September -5pm sharp!!! Once off processing fee of $23.00. This can be paid by POST Billpay online or by Invoice. You will receive the invoice in the mail and it needs to be paid immediately at the Post Office. After 3 working days, if you have paid the fee, you are able to access your application.

    16. LATE APPLICATION FEES After 5:00 pm, Friday 28th September Cost $78.00, payable by either POSTbillpay online using your credit card or by invoice Applications close 5:00 pm, Friday 16th November Very Late Applications After 5:00 pm, Friday 16th November Cost $100.00, payable (as above) Applications close 5:00 pm Friday 14th December

    17. Application process cont…. Internet - VTAC website www.vtac.edu.au Applications can be completed at school and Mr White and Mrs Pendlebury will be around to assist if needed During the application process Students will need VCAA Student number Students will need to enter an original PIN which is based on their birthday. Eg: If your birthday is 14th August your pin will be 1408. During the application students will need to create a new PIN. If you have sat the UMAT test you will need your registration number.

    18. Things to consider when applying Am I really interested in that course? Have I read the course description and do I like the subjects that will be covered in the course? Do I meet all of the prerequisites? Do I like the jobs that this course will lead into? A job guide may help out with this. Have I left my options open? (Uni, TAFE, ITC) Are there any extra requirements that need to be completed? (Folio, interviews, fitness tests, UMAT)

    19. Prerequisites These must be adhered to!!! Prerequisites are not all the same at each institution. Eg: Chemistry is required to complete Physiotherapy at University of Melbourne but it is not required at Charles Sturt University and it is not required at LaTrobe University if other science or maths subjects have been completed. University of Melbourne also require applicants to have completed the UMAT test which was conducted in July.

    20. ELIGIBILITY: University and ITCs The satisfactory completion of both the VCE and Units 3 and 4 English (any). Any of the four VCE English studies — English, ESL, Literature or English Language — satisfies this requirement Note: some independent tertiary colleges may accept applicants with equivalent senior secondary completion such as Senior VCAL — check with individual colleges for their entrance requirements.

    21. ELIGIBILITY – TAFE For the TAFE course that require students to apply through VTAC students are eligibility if They satisfactory complete both the VCE and units 3 and 4 English (any) or equivalent senior secondary completion such as Senior VCAL or literacy requirements as stated in VET Training packages/curriculum. New Zealand citizens cannot apply to TAFE courses through VTAC. TAFE regards them as international students; therefore they must apply directly to the TAFE institutes.

Course code types Type 1 courses – Commonwealth Support Places Payment of University student contribution Upfront - 20% discount HECS-HELP for the full student contribution Pay some and receive 20% discount Repayment starts when you earn $39,825+ (2007/08) The approx fee costs are listed on pg 15 in the VTAC guide TAFE Institutes Set own fees to maximum of $860 per calendar year. Approx $1.34 per contact hour, concessions apply No government loan schemes for TAFE

    23. Type 2 course codes Payment is required upfront However, …… FEE-HELP Can borrow if course has HELP status. To check status of courses go to www.goingtouni.gov.au Can borrow up to $80,000 life time limit or $100,000 for medicine et al 20% loan fee for example borrowed 10,000 + 20% = 12,000 owed. Repayment starts when you earn $39,825 (2007/08) New Zealand citizens are not eligible for a FEE-HELP loan or discount

    24. Type 1 vs Type 2 Students can apply for both Type 1 and Type 2 courses Type 2 courses have a slightly lower ENTER but don’t rely on that!!! Students may receive an offer from both types and then they can make a choice

    25. Preferences Students can apply up to 12 preferences Preferences can be made up of combination of Type 1, Type 2, University and TAFE courses Preferences should be entered in the order that you want to do the courses from the most preferred to the least– not in ENTER score order unless that is the order that you really want to do them

    26. As a rule of thumb…. APPLY FOR 12 TYPE 1 COURSES 2 WITH A VERY HIGH ENTER (for you) 3 WITH A HIGH ENTER 4 WITH AN AVERAGE ENTER 3 WITH A LOW ENTER (E.G TAFE PATHWAY) If you want to add Type 2 courses than alter the above to cater for those courses

    28. Please Consider If you have been averaging 82% on SACS, don’t translate this to an ENTER of 82. ENTER is a ranking not a percentage. Your raw scores are moderated and then scaled. Think of your ranking statewide-an ENTER of 82 means you were in the top 18% statewide, not at Assumption. Dream and have two preferences with a high Enter, BUT BE REALISTIC.

ENTER Calculations An ENTER is a ranking and not a score An ENTER is developed using the scaled study scores of English/ESL or Literature or English Language + best three study scores + 10% of the 5th and 6th study scores This gives students a total out of 210. All Victorian students are then given a percentage ranking which is converted into a National ENTER score. An ENTER of 65 means that the student is in the top 35% of the state.

    30. Scaling of Study Scores With 54 VCE studies - VTAC adjusts study scores to allow for any differences in the overall performance of groups of students taking the different studies. VTAC can only add scores together if the value is the same for example: a study score of 25 in Economics = a study score of 25 Religion and society = scaling Scaling ensures that each study contributes equally to the ENTER.

    31. Scaling cont…. Scaling of subjects are only completed for the purpose of ranking of students for Institutions. Subjects where the overall population has done very well would be scaled down. Subjects where the overall population hasn’t done as well would be scaled up. It should be noted, however, the higher the study score in these subjects the less they are effected by scaling.     32. Scholarships All institutions have a lot f money available for scholarships you just need to apply. Information can be found on the relevant institution website, at Open Days and on the myfuture website. Applications usually close in October so you should apply for scholarships at the same time that you are applying for courses

    33. Residential Accommodation Applications for College Residence should be applied for at the same time that you are applying for courses. Each university has their own application form and closing date so you need to check the websites. Residential Colleges should be visited on Open Days. Costs usually range between $8000 and $12000 depending on whether they are fully catered or not. References are usually required so please don’t leave these to the last minute if you are going to ask staff to fill them out for you.

    34. RESULTS Results and ENTER available via internet or telephone - December 17 from 7 a.m. Statements of results and ENTER mailed to selected address - December 18. Careers and curriculum staff available in both schools. Most universities and TAFE colleges offer information sessions/hotlines at this time. Details in Term 4.

    35. CHANGE OF PREFERENCE Change of preference October 11 -19 and December 3 – 24. Closes at 12 noon. - not 5 past !!! All students are invited to make appointments with Careers Staff if they want assistance at this time Final selection of courses should be in preference order not score order

    36. Offers Offer process - Jan/Feb 15 January 2008: Main round offers online, press or via SMS 31 January 2008: Round 2 offers online and press 14 February 2008: Round 3 offers online only.

    37. Advisory Letters Some Institutions make early offers as of the 30th November. The advisory letters fall into the following categories A(1) Institution prepared to make offer if all other requirements met A(2) Institution prepared to make offer if met predetermined ENTER B(1) May receive Round 2 offer or following consideration of other info eg ENTER B(2) ENTER will be a factor and a weighting may be applied to certain factor(s) C Thank you but no thank you - Take off pref list

    38. ACCEPTANCE OF OFFERS To be eligible for a Second Round offer and to stay in the VTAC system, students must respond to their First Round offer. Information regarding second round offers will be available electronically and in the press on Jan 31. No guarantee of second round offer.

    39. Deferment Not all Institutions allow deferment. This is especially the case for the University of Melbourne for 2008. Students need to check each of the Institutions policies in the VTAC guide.
