History of Islam • Emerged in the Arabian Peninsula • Founded by Muhammad • He was troubled by people’s lack of morals and idol worshipping • As he meditated he heard a voice say “ Recite!” He replied “What shall I recite?” The voice chirped back, “Recite in the name of your God, the Creator, who created man from clots of blood.” • It was the angel Gabriel the Messenger of God.

  3. Split in Islam • Split after the death of Muhammad • Who was assassinated in 661 A.D. • His daughter (Fatimah Zahra) and son-in-law argued that they were the true successors—this became the Shiite point of view. • The Sunni’s believed that a highest Muslim should be a leader not a religious authority.

  4. Shia forms • Muhammad’s son-in-law became the fourth caliph. • Caliph-successor to Muhammad or Religious leader • First caliph-Abu Bakr • Fourth caliph-Ali • Who was assassinated in 661 A.D. later his son was assassinated as well.

  5. The FIGHTING began • After the death of Ali, there was constant turmoil between the Sunnis and Shiities. • They began to admire martyrdom as a way to show their faith. • Shiites died fighting the Sunni’s during their quest to leadership • This fighting still continues today 

  6. 7 Pillars of Shiites • Guardianship(Walayah) • Denotes love and devotion to God • Prayer(Salah) • Wants to designate style and form of prayer • Purity(Taharah) • The druze do not include this as a pillar • Charity(Zakah) • Payment of 1/8 of one’s unspent money at the end of the year • Fasting(Sawm) • To fast is one’s obligation to avoid devilish acts • Pilgrimage • Visiting the imam or his representative • Greatest and most spiritual of all pilgrimages • Struggle(Jihad) • Confrontation with the enemies of faith

Interesting Facts • Second largest denomination of Islam following Sunni • Shia faith is vast and inclusive of many different groups • First Shia government and societies were established by the end of the 3rd century • Divided into 3 groups: • Twelver • Form majority of population in Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, and Iraq • Ismaili • Zaidi
