Background & History Not of this presentation, but of the operator’s background with RNAV What is technology level of current fleet mix (has pilot group cycled through most or all levels) More important than installed technology, is the way or level that the avionics suite is used (e.g. 737 non-EFIS, where enroute is only application)

    3. Background & History Establishing the baseline of knowledge: Generally RNAV/RNP conceptual knowledge is very low Previous “hands-on” experience with RNP has been non-existent, due to lack of equipage Due to terminal/approach restrictions on previous aircraft, may be a factor to overcome

    4. Implementation Strategy With knowledge baseline, establish program requirements: Operational versus mechanical/design? Aircraft system specific, automation level How widespread/sweeping is the change Every operator has a unique philosophical culture

Implementation Strategy Classroom training that included minimal theory, and maximum practical/operational knowledge using (US Airways A320/A330 experience): Standup lecture, PowerPoint, video Part task trainers/FTDs integrated in classroom syllabus (mini-LOFTs) RNAV is not an “add-on”, but fundamental to operation of A/C

    8. Implementation Strategy RNAV approach procedures make up 50% of the aircraft’s primary approach capability. Not a “one foot in each camp” philosophy, but an RNP operation. Objective made easier due to total absence of traditional NPA training. With the mandate of Lateral and Vertical guidance for all approaches, it became a matter of correlating the differences with existing procedures.

Implementation Strategy Areas that deserved/received special emphasis: Source of navigational information (airborne vs ground based) Charting which included, RNP designation-associated minima, minimum temperature, VNAV angle Barometric altimetery errors/effects Reasonableness checks, to expose coding errors

    11. Implementation Strategy Training exposure summary: 11 ground training periods 8 FF Simulator period + PC + LOFT IOE demonstration (conditions permitting)

    12. Current Activities We have conducted in excess of 1500 approaches in line operations Several airports/runways are solely dependent on RNAV for A320 arrivals (KSAN27, KLGA “A” 22)
