    1. Albuquerque International Sunport Environmental Assessment to Evaluate the Closure of Runway 17-35

    2. Purpose and Need For Runway Closure Early 1990s Sunport Master Plan originally recommended the closure of Runway 17-35 2003 Sunport Master Plan revisited the runway closure and again determined it would be in the best interest of the airport The EA will, using updated models and data, evaluate the runway closure from a social and environmental perspective

    3. 2003 Sunport Master Plan Findings Regarding Runway 17-35 Safety Runway 17-35 intersects all other runways, increasing the opportunity for runway incursions. Wind Coverage 50 years of wind data indicated that Runway 17-35 is needed for less than 1,400 operations per year. Capacity Increased use of Runway 17-35 lowers airfield capacity and increases aircraft delays. Costs At the time of the Sunport Master Plan preparation, short term rehabilitation costs were estimated at $27.0 million. Other Considerations Use of Runway 17-35 results in direct overflights of neighborhoods north of the airport. Runway safety area (RSA) improvements are needed to meet FAA RSA design standards. Airport is land-poor, closure of Runway 17-35 opens up potential development opportunities.

    4. 2003 Sunport Master Plan

    5. Use of Runway 17-35 Since Completion of 2003 Sunport Master Plan Runway is restricted to use by aircraft 12,500 pounds or less Two letters of agreement allow the 58th Special Operations Wing and 150th Fighter Wing use of Runway 17-35 under certain conditions.
