  3. Course Policies • Page xix to xxix in First-Year Writing 7th Ed 2013-2014 version • Since we don’t have much time but 80 min, I expect you to read it through in your own time. And it is your responsibility of reading them and knowing them thoroughly.

  4. Raider Writer (RW) • https://raiderwriter.engl.ttu.edu/ • Use Firefox for RW; free download: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ • You will receive a welcome e-mail through which you can activate your RW account. • Take a grammar diagnostic exam (1 ½ hour to 2 hours) • Set up your account as soon as possible (within 48 hours) because the link for setup will be expired shortly. • If you have any technological problem see FAQ in our course blog. If you cannot solve issues even after going through the FAQ, email me.

  5. St. Martin’s Handbook • You may either purchase directly through the Bedford/St. Martins website or purchase an access card with code from the campus bookstore. • Go to ebooks.bfwpub.com/ttu. The homepage contains links to either purchase the book or register an activation code from an access card. You will need to know your instructor’s last name and course number. • You will be given 4-year subscription.

So please check EVERYDAY! • You will find “home,” “Assignment Description,” “Contact,” “Course Syllabus,” “Power Point Slides,” and “Useful Links.” • When you do your Brief Assignments (BA) Always follow the “Assignment Description” of the web, not RW’s assignment description. There might be some modifications.

  7. What is rhetoric? • Write what you know and what you think about rhetoric. Please put your name and email address (ttu email); then give that to me at the end of the class. This will count as your participation grade(your grade and my comment will be sent via email).

  12. Assignment for next week (Reading)Due 9/5. Don’t forget to work on BA1 (due 9/3) as well! • First-year Writing: Chapter One, pp. 2-15; Chapter 12,  - Stephen Budiansky: “Lost in Translation” pp. 238-244 - Scott Jaschik: “Winning Hearts and Minds on Plagiarism” pp. 261-266 • St. Martin’s Handbook: Chapter 1, “Expectations for College Writing”; Chapter 60a, “Reading Texts in the Humanities” and DiYanni, “Developing a College Vocabulary” (available in the final part of the handbook, “WID/Critical Reading Skills”)

  13. Review • 1) Buy the textbook and e-handbook and activate your Raider Writer account. • 2) Take the grammar diagnostic exam and complete BA1 by Tuesday (9/3), then submit it into Raider Writer. Don’t send it to me. • 3) Complete the reading assignment for next week. • 4) Make sure you read the course policy and understand it well (we may have a quiz on itas well).
