  1. Care Home Practice Education Pilot in Diagnostic Radiography Amy Wareing Lecturer of Diagnostic Radiography Robert Gordon University

  2. Philosophy and ethos • The need to emphasise basic care skills back into the training portfolio for undergraduate Radiographers & AHP’s is a primary objective… • The evidence: Stafford ward environment… Inquiry shows clearly that for many patients the most basic elements of care were neglected.

  3. Background • Process started from January 2012 • Asked at school level in RGU (OT, PT, HIP, ASES, DR) could we incorporate a care home pilot study in our course • Team discussion • Yes we can! But when and how….

  4. Our perspective @RGU Radiography • Engage students early in the course (stage 1) to understand and assist with basic care • Aim to emphasise care skills throughout the other stages in DR by developing a grounding. • Develop care and empathy of new graduates into the profession to facilitate long term change in the roots of the profession.

  5. The Care Home Pilot • Joint collaboration: NHS Education for Scotland, Care Inspectorate and Robert Gordon University. • Send students into a structured practice education care environment • Evaluate experiences: both service providers and students • Look to role out for all radiography students • Disseminate

  6. Practicalities • Consecutive 3 day practice education placement in a care environment (e.g. Care Home) • 5 students (1 withdrew from the project) & 3 Care providers utilised for placements. • Briefing afternoon & pre-placement evaluation • Opportunity for students to meet/discuss with RGU placement co-ordinator and NES evaluation.

  7. Evaluation • Two focus groups before and after transcribed and video recorded. • Students stories / NES video • Themes: Practical skills, confidence, communication, sharing skills with others • Successful! Roll out as part of the course for DR stage 2 (39 students!). • Dissemination: GCU, National conference and aim to publish.

  8. This day the 12th March in 1894 …. First Coca cola sold in Vicksberg, Mississippi. • Today is also National No Smoking day, so good job you if you’ve stopped! Thank you for listening…2 interesting facts: Amy Wareing, Lecturer of Radiography, a.wareing@rgu.ac.uk 01224 263267
