  1. ST Computing issues ST Division mandate and fields of activity Overview of Computing in ST user communities tools applications Needs, remarks, suggestions Eva Sánchez-Corral

  2. ST Division mandate To provide technical support for accelerators and related experimental areas, including the LHC project Management of general services related to buildings and building facilities heating, air conditioning and low voltage electrical systems, including cleaning and green area maintenance. Eva Sánchez-Corral

  3. ST Division fields of activity Civil engineering Ventilation and cooling by water and air Power distribution from 400 kV to low voltage Heavy handling Telecommunication Access control and video systems and Monitoring of the technical infrastructure Eva Sánchez-Corral

  4. ST Division Organisation Management and Coordination (DI) Alarm and Access (AA) Civil engineering (CE) Cooling and Ventilation (CV) Electrical Engineering and Telecom (EL) Heavy Handling and Transport (HM) Monitoring and Operation (MO) Technical Facilities Management (TFM) Eva Sánchez-Corral

  5. Computing in ST Computing in ST is VERY IMPORTANT CERN technical installations rely on it several specific domains of activity ‘User Communities’ domains in every group: Administration (resources, services, contracts) Project management and development Design Office Maintenance Management (assets and works) Control and Monitoring Eva Sánchez-Corral

  6. ST Computing: tools used 99% of ST: PC NICE user Administration Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro Access, Oracle Forms & Reports AIS applications specific applications in-house developed no longer used CDD and EDMS-CADIM drawings and documents Eva Sánchez-Corral

  7. ST Computing: tools (2) Project management MS Project, GDPM tool (testing) Design Office 2D: AutoCAD and extensions for specific domains, Microstation 3D: Euclid, STAR (cartography) Facilities Management: CAMMS Rapier, MP5 assets and work management & maintenance Eva Sánchez-Corral

  8. ST Computing: tools (3) Control and Monitoring (it‘s a very heterogeneous domain) Supervisory systems SCADA or middleware (FactorylinkTM, SCATE-XTM, VISIONICTM, DataviewsTM, WizconTM, RTsmartsocketsTM) Operating systems: HP-UX, Tru64 UnixTM, Lynx OSTM, OS2TM, Windows NTTM, Windows 95TM, OS9TM, Linux Eva Sánchez-Corral

  9. ST Computing: tools (4) Control and Monitoring Platforms: HP, Compaq, PowerPC, PC, ... Languages and tools: C, C++, Java, Xwindows, Web-based interfaces, TCL/TK Communication: TCP/IP, CORBA, OLE, COM, DCOM, Active-X, Profibus, WordFIP, CAN, MIL-1553 Databases:OracleTM, SQL, PL/SQL, Pro C, INGRESTM Eva Sánchez-Corral

  10. ST Computing: applications Oracle Forms GESMAR: contracts follow-up ELEC: electrical cabling CERN Patrimony Management MS Access Green Space Management Cleaning Service OMNIS CERN Vehicles Management Eva Sánchez-Corral

  11. Needs, remarks, suggestions More reliable and faster Network A more stable and simple NICE working environment to handle daily normal work more easily and efficiently Documentation short but practical and easily available IT unique support contact via helpdesk internal IT co-responsibilities transparent to users Eva Sánchez-Corral

  12. Needs, remarks, suggestions (2) ACB service improvement service should be specially available and reliable during holidays, week-ends and outside working hours Integration of all the DBs and applications dealing with the CERN Computing Inventory Eva Sánchez-Corral

  13. Needs, remarks, suggestions (3) A Project Management Tool appropriate for big projects (LHC) and medium and small ones CERN-wide, Web-Interface, access to HR db supported by IT/AS? Support for EDMS long time response CFU not user friendly, difficult to ‘find’ data Eva Sánchez-Corral

  14. Needs, remarks, suggestions (3) CAD tools It works quite well, with small resources, but with the LHC design (where we are "gourmands") it should by no means decrease the co-responsibility IT/EST(ISS) should be transparent to users Eva Sánchez-Corral

  15. Needs, remarks, suggestions (4) Networks The control networks (SL/CO) and IT network are very much tight together Safety Control Room and Technical Control Room relies on the IT network for their 24/365 operation -> availability 24/365 the sharing of responsibilities is never clear the support is very difficult to obtain when a problem occur Eva Sánchez-Corral
