Explain the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and anti-Asian immigration sentiment on the west coast. • b. Describe the Spanish-American War, the war in the Philippines, and the debate over American expansionism. • c. Explain U.S. involvement in Latin America, as reflected by the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine and the creation of the Panama Canal.

Explain the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and anti-immigration sentiment of the west coast • Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was an act passed by US Congress at the urging of US Labor Unions…wonder why hummm? • What did it do? • Why did the Labor Unions dislike the Chinese? • Sentiment was very _________ • Racist groups claimed Chinese were inferior physically & less intelligent. What do you think?

Prohibited Chinese from legally entering the US • Why did the Labor Unions dislike the Chinese? • Chinese accepted lower wages • Chinese were hard workers & were intelligent workers (Think Great Wall of China) • Sentiment was very anti-Asian • Racist groups claimed Chinese were inferior physically & less intelligent. What do you think?

A stronger nation conquers weaker nations, economically, politically, militarily, or culturally in attempts to expand the empire • Who did Cuba revolt against? Spain & war ensued • Why did the US did get involved? US business interests were threatened • What was the USS Maine sent to Havana Harbor for and what happened to it? To protect US business interests & suspiciously explodes 3 weeks later • What was the American reaction? They are outraged & call for war • Who led the attack against Spain in Cuba? Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders led the attack, defeating the Spanish in 3 days

  9. 14b. War in the Philippines • Meanwhile in the Philippines, colony of Spain, were revolting as well against Spain • T. Roosevelt called for generals to prepare for war with Spain • Admiral George Dewey was told to attack the Spanish fleet if war broke out • Surprise! Attack led to the destruction of Spain’s entire pacific fleet in 7 hours • Major show of power by the US & Philippines thought they were going to be given their independence • Did they get it?
