Feedback to 1900.7 PAROverview given to 802.11 WG Authors: Date: 2011-03-16 Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
Abstract This presentations lists * High level summary of feedback given to 1900.7 PAR * Actions required by 802.11 Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
1900.7 PAR Scope & Purpose • Scope: ... MAC & PHY of whitespacedynamicspectrumaccessradiosystemssupportingfixed and mobile operation in whitespacefrequencybands, whileavoidingcausingharmfulinterference to incumbentusers in thesefrequencybands. Thestandardprovidesmeans to supportotherrelated IEEE 1900 standards. • FromPurpose:Cover “all possibleapplicationareas” • High mobiliy / lowmobility • High & low power • Short, medium, and longrangecommunication • Varioustopologies: cellular, ad-hoc, mesh, etc • baselinestandardfor a family of otherstandardsthatcouldbedevelopedfocusing on particularapplications, regulatorydomains, etc. Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
Feedback • Includes responses from 1900.7 members and other 802 groups (“joint session in 802.19.1” on Tuesday); more detailed feedback expected from specific 802 groups • Scope too broad. • 1900.7 is underestimating the required engineering effort to make everything stated in the PAR work • Missing to clearly identify the need for a new MAC & PHY to make use of white spaces and to make use of other 1900.xxx standards • Desired technical requirements of “new” MAC&PHY mostly covered by existing 802.xx MAC/PHY; no justification for new project (there was a reason / complexity why not all “features” are enabled by a single MAC/PHY) • Missing industrialsupport of the PAR • Stated assumptions on 802.xxx MAC/PHY capabilities partially false or misleading Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
802.11-specifics • 1900.7 Chairparticipated in a TGaftelcoforfeedback • In addition to feedback as statedabove: • Members of TGafpointed 1900.7 to inaccurateormisleadingstatementsregarding 802.11 • 1900.7 didpartiallydisagreewiththosecomments in theirinternaldiscussion • 1900.7 didnotaddress all consernsaddressedduringthetelphoneconference as there was not an „official“ commentdocumentby 802.11 / documentedfeedback Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
Required 802.11 Actions • 802.11 should provide an “official” feedback on the 1900.7 PAR • 802.11 will discuss the 1900.7 PAR in PAR session Thursday PM1 Marc Emmelmann (Fraunhofer FOKUS)
