What’s the Key for Me to Know? • When you are really into a book, you recognize when you get to a part you don’t understand. • It’s the reader’s job to know when the text makes sense and when it doesn’t. • Good readers stop when there’s a comprehension breakdown, figure out what the problem is and how they can fix it.

  3. Some “Fix-Up” Options • Reading ahead • Raising new questions • Drawing inferences • Making predictions • Figuring out unknown words • Seeking help from an outside source • Stopping to think • Connecting the reader to background knowledge • Trying to get a mental image • Looking at sentence structure • Inspecting pictures and other text features • Reading the author’s note • Writing about the confusing parts • Consciously thinking about the text’s message • Defining the purpose for why we’re reading in the first place

  4. Reading Strategy:Repairing Understanding • Good readers realize that they sometimes may not be understanding what they are reading. They use a variety of “Fix-Up” strategies to make sure they comprehend what they are reading.

  5. Good readers monitor and repair understanding by: • Tracking their thinking through coding, writing, or discussion • Noticing when they lost focus • Stopping and going back to clarify thinking • Rereading to enhance understanding • Reading ahead to clarify thinking • Identifying what is confusing in the text • Matching the problem with the strategy that will best help solve it.

  6. Fixing Comprehension You should apply “Fix-Up” strategies when you get stuck on a word. You should know how to use “Fix-Up” strategies when you get confused.
