  1. International Workshop “Supersolids 2011”Anatoly Kuklov, CUNY College of Staten Island, DMR 1063344 This award has supported the International Workshop "Supersolids 2011" devoted to studying the new state of matter – Supersolid – which possibly exists in solid Helium-4 and could be “synthesized” in other systems such as ultracold trapped atoms. Supersolid is a quantum state of matter which simultaneously exhibits properties of a solid and a fluid which has no viscosity --- superfluid. Theoretically, such state was proposed by several prominent theoreticians more than 40 years ago. However, despite numerous efforts it has not been observed yet. This workshop has attracted leading researchers with complimentary expertise – in experiment and theory. It has presented an opportunity for active discussions of several conflicting views on the nature of the supersolid in general and on the current situation in Helium-4.

Broader impacts Anatoly Kuklov, CUNY College of Staten Island, DMR 1063344 Among the total of 57 participants 27 were young researchers – graduate, undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This event has induced a strong resonance among the CUNY and NYC communities. In addition to NSF it was sponsored by ICAM, CUNY High Performance Computing Center and the Initiative for Theoretical Sciences at the Graduate Center of CUNY. As a part of the broader impacts, Dr. Sebastien Balibar has presented a public lecture on the nature of superfluidty and supersolidity. The history of the discoveries and how the understanding of the effects has evolved were discussed in a very transparent and attractive manner, which should stimulate strong interest in Condensed Matter Physics among the general public and, especially, among students.
