  1. SJHS Student Council • To provide student leadership in the areas of school loyalty and organization of specified school activities • To provide support and dialogue with faculty and administration • To promote the ideals and principles reflected in the mission statement of SJHS

  2. Meetings & Activities • Meetings held on a monthly basis during or after school • Other various activities • Spirit Days activities / fostering and promoting school spirit • Ongoing dialogue and cooperation with faculty and administration • Morning Announcements • Dress-down days • Major events such as Orientation, Back to School Night, Eighth Grade Visit Day, Open House, and the Auction

  3. Membership – Structure Senior Class Committee (3 offs, 7 reps) Junior Class Committee (3 offs, 7 reps) Student Council Officers (3) Freshman Class Committee (3 offs, 7 reps) Sophomore Class Committee (3 offs, 7 reps) At–Large (4+ reps)

  4. Membership – Criteria • Good academic standing • Passing five solids • No academic probation • Good disciplinary standing • Cooperative student-citizen of SJHS community • No disciplinary probation

  5. Membership – Requirements • Student Council Officers • Must be an incoming senior • Must have served previously, with distinction, as a Class Officer or Class Representative • Class Officers & Representatives • Must be a member of that class • At-Large Club Representatives • Must be selected by that club

  6. Membership – Responsibilities • All members • attending Council meetings, during or outside the school day • helping out at other designated Council functions, e.g. Orientation and Open House • working with Council and/or Class Moderator(s) to plan activities, e.g. Spirit Days • Student Council & Senior Class Officers • anchoring the Morning Announcement program on a daily basis • Student Council Officers & Class Presidents • Attending the Principal’s Advisory Council meetings

  7. Membership – Responsibilities • Student Council Officers • President: conducts Council meetings, meets with Administration as necessary • Vice President: assists President, takes his or her place in case of absence • Secretary: keeps attendance records and minutes of Council meetings

  8. Membership – Responsibilities • Class Officers • Class President: reports to the Council at each meeting on class activities, attends Principal’s Advisory Council meetings • Class Vice President: assists President, takes his or her place in case of absence • Class Secretary: keeps records and minutes of class meetings • Class Representatives • ELECTED Representative (6) • APPOINTED Representative (1): Each class moderator will appoint after the other six are elected

  9. Membership – Responsibilities At-Large Club Representatives Report and coordinate club activities with Student Council Guest on the Morning Announcement program when the club has a major activity

  10. Membership – Responsibilities • Freshman & Sophomore Class Committees • Plan Autumn and Winter Homecoming dances • Junior Class Committee • Plan Midwinter and Prom dances • Senior Class Committee • Plan Senior Class activities, e.g. Senior Euchre Party

  11. Election Procedures • Attend the orientation meeting(s) • Complete the Declaration of Candidacy form • Signature to verify attendance at orientation meeting(s) • Student Council Officer candidates must obtain BOTH the signature of the last Class Moderator for whom you served AND three teacher signatures. If you cannot obtain the former, you may not run for Student Council Office. • Class Officer and Representative candidates must obtain EITHER the signature of the last Class Moderator for whom you served OR three teacher signatures. If you cannot obtain the former, you may run for Representative only.

  12. Election Procedures • Campaigning • Posters, literature must be initialed by a moderator • Posters must be removed at end of campaign • No stickers, no food • Speeches (Officers only) • Short (half-page), typed, submitted in advance for possible editing for length and content • Keep a copy • No deviations allowed from speech • Any deviation may result in disqualification
