  1. How Safe Is Your Home – Your 3-Point Apartment Security Checklist

  2. It’s really important to keep your apartment as safe as it can possibly be at all times, and while having strong locks on the doors might be the first thing you think of when considering safety, you should also be thinking about any balconies that are attached to your home, and whether they are secure enough and present no risk of falling or any other injury. To make sure your home is ticking all the right boxes on the security front, here is your 3-point safety and security checklist:

  3. All doors – are they secure enough? Consider whether the main door leading into your apartment is secure enough – your apartment complex may have security, but what if another resident tries to get in? A peephole can also help you determine who’s at the door, so that if it’s someone you don’t recognize or don’t want to open the door to (for instance if you’re at home alone), you don’t have to. You should also consider whether any internal doors that lead to outdoor spaces such as the balcony, can be secured to prevent small children accessing the space when unsupervised.

  4. Your domestic help – can you trust them? It’s important that anyone you hire to help you around the home, or whom you give access to your home to, has been vetted professionally through a background check. In many instances, theft from apartments can be attributed to domestic helpers, and while most of them are trustworthy and honest, there will always be a few who give others a bad reputation. To be on the safe side when having domestic help inside your home, lock your valuables away and avoid telling them too many details about your personal life and routines.

  5. Balconies – have they been child and pet-proofed? Most apartments have at least one balcony, and while these can be made into wonderful spaces in which to enjoy the great outdoors without having to set foot outside your home, they can also be incredibly dangerous for small children and pets. Aside from making sure any internal doors leading balconies are secure and can’t be breached (even by a particularly determined toddler or dog!), you should take steps to ensure that neither children or pets are at risk of falling over the edge. Such accidents often have tragic endings, but fortunately, are so easy to prevent by having a safety net installed. Affordable but extremely effective – while still allowing light to come through and views to be seen – safety nets for balconies are the perfect solution to any worries you might have about your little ones, two-legged or four-legged, falling over the side to their possible death.

  6. With a little effort and plenty of due diligence, you can make sure your apartment is safe and secure for everyone to use, including your balcony.
