  2. Summary of the Brief • Working alongside Aspire Psychologists on a pioneering new study • Alternative to traditional teaching methods such as flash-cards • iPadbased game developed to aid teaching phonetics to young offenders • Successful tuition results in greater employability and therefore reduces • the re-offending rates of inmates The Solution • An app developed for the iPad which incorporates an exploration • mechanic with the kinaesthetic learning of phonetics

  3. Technologies Utilised – iPad and Google TTS API • The client stipulated that the project needed to be developed for the iPad • It was decided that in order to get 3D content on the iPad we would use the • Flash platform (which was never officially supported by Apple) • The project required Text-To-Speech (TTS) functionality in order to allow for • flexible methods of teaching • A work-around had to be created to allow the App to access the Google TTS • functionality from the iPad

  4. Technologies Utilised – Away3D 3.6 and 4.0 (beta) • As Away3D 3.6 doesn’t properly make use of hardware acceleration the game • itself was heavily optimised during development • The recent release of Adobe AIR 3.2 and the Stage3D API allowed for the • Away3D 4.0 engine to be used • Away3D 4.0 is still in beta with limited documentation and tutorial resources • Since the release of AIR 3.2 we have successfully utilised it in our • phonetic learning game and have achieved massive performance increases • However the software PreFab3D, which is used to generate the exploratory • environment, only supports Away3D 3.6. The plan for the future will be to be • port this section to Away3D 4.0 once it becomes supported

  5. In Conclusion • Recent upgrades to Away3d 4.0 to utilise these technologies • Cutting edge technologies that are still in development and with the few • resources available has resulted in us breaking into new grounds • Not only do we have an innovative solution, but we have come up with • innovative methods by which the solution is implemented
