ITER By Alex Kimn
The birth of iter • Fossil fuels became increasingly viewed as negatively impacting the Earth’s environment • ITER was first conceived when the USSR and US found that by themselves, neither could produce viable fusion energy • Started by a meeting in 1985 between Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagen, to create fusion energy “as an inexhaustible source of energy for the benefit of mankind”
General information • The purpose of ITER was to prove that fusion energy would be possible • Also meant to test and find suitable materials for the tokomak reactor • It would form a foundation to future fusion research • Fuses deuterium and tritium nuclei in to helium to create fusion energy • Foundation work commenced in 2011
difficulties • Though fusion power has nearly limitless potential, ITER itself was only made to prove fusion conceivable, not commercially viable • ITER is billions of dollars over cost, and years behind schedule • The overall cost estimate has risen from 5 to 16 billion euros • Projected completion of the tokomak has been pushed from 2015 2020, pushing the start date for plasma reactions in 2026
