Grammar point 1: Passive When A does something to B, this can be described from two different angles (1) from the viewpoint of A, who performs the action (active) (2) from the viewpoint of B, who is on the receiving end of the action (passive) From: Situational Functional Japanese Volume 3 Notes, Tsukuba Language Group, Bonjinsha Co., LTD.

  5. Two types of Passives 1. Direct Passives This is used when the actor directly affects the subject. 2. Indirect Passives This normally implies the subject is somehow being inconvenienced by the action of the verb.

  6. 1. Direct Passives This is used when the actor directly affects the subject. れい: Active sentence 先生がリサさんをほめました。 Passive sentence リサさんが先生にほめられました。 The subjectis marked by the particle が/は and the person who performs the action is marked by に.

  7. Direct passive examples • リサさんは山下さんに映画にさそわれました。 • スミスさんは先生にほんやくをたのまれた。 • こんばん(私は)鈴木先生に食事にさそわれています。 Lisa-san was invited to the movies by Yamashita-san. Smith-san was asked by his teacher to do a translation. I’m invited to dinner by Suzuki-sensei this evening.

  8. 2.Indirect Passives This normally implies the subject is somehow being inconvenienced by the action of the verb. Victim は Villianに Evil Act (verb) Active Sentence 1.鈴木さんがリサさんのカメラをこわしました。 Passive Sentence Suzuki-san broke Lisa-san’s camera. 2.リサさんが鈴木さんにカメラをこわされました。 Lisa-san had her camera broken by Suzuki-san

  9. Indirect Passives Con’t • The person who is directly affected is the subject marked by が/は. • His/her belongings is marked by を. • The person performing the action by に. れい (私は)どろぼうにお金をとられた。 I had my money stolen by a burglar.

  10. How to make the passive form • Ru-verbs • Drop the final –ruand add –rare-ru • U-verbs • Drop the final –u and add-are-ru • Irregular verbs • くる  こられる • する  される (Note this is the same as the potential form!!!!) (Note this is the same as the potential form!!!!)

  14. Grammar Point 2 ~てある • This expresses a state resulting from an action (implies someone is responsible for the action although not stated.) れい: 1.ドアーが開けてあります。 2.ジュースが冷蔵庫に入れてあります。 3.ここに住所が書いてあります。 The door has been opened. Juice has been put in the fridge. The address is written here.

  15. ~ている VS ~てある • ~ている ignores that there was an actor or force that may have acted • ~てある indicates that someone brought about that action. • ~ておく indicates that someone did the action verb for a future purpose
