  2. 1. Course Introduction • Prayer • Methodologies for approaching the NT • Overview & its problems • Start with Mathew and see how far you get • Combination of the two • Survey course –so broad but introduce all books • Detailed look at interesting/crucial/problematic texts

  3. 1. Course Introduction • If desire detailed work in text become a Bible major • Focus • Understand books in their historical contexts often in response to problems • Not theological textbooks: here’s everything about spiritual gifts etc. • Addressing specific situations and environment

  4. 1. Introduction to Course • Look at the NT in its historical context: • Why did they write? • Why did they write four gospels? • The Christmas story as an example • The conceptual framework more from modern environment than first century

  5. 1. Introduction to Course • The NT as Scriptures and the Word of God • How is it these historical documents have abiding importance to the people of God? • How do they function as God’s word for people today? • How do these historical texts continue to speak to us?

  6. 1. Introduction to Course • Class processes: Lecture method and questions, interaction • Specific requirements • Two documents needed: syllabus and notebook (Blackboard) • Notes: Lectures will follow notes • Things to bring to class: Bible

  7. 1. Introduction to Course • Three primary textbooks: • Introducing the New Testament, Achtemeier, Green and Thompson • Making Sense of the New Testament—how to read and apply the NT • The Lost Letters of Pergamum, Bruce Longacre

  8. 1. Introduction to Course • Reading schedule in the syllabus for each week New Testament reading schedule in syllabus • Requirements • 6 Quizzes: on reading material for the week, description of • Exams: description, Bible reading and lecture material

  9. 1. Introduction to Course • 4 Extra-credit review sessions by the Teaching Assistant (TA) • Problem: playing on computer in class • Any other questions?
