  1. Cochlear Implants

  2. What is a Cochlear Implant? A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.

  3. Cochlear implant parts • Microphone - Picks up sound from the environment • Speech processor - Selects and arranges sounds picked up by the microphone • Transmitter and receiver - Receive signals from the speech processor and convert them into electric impulses • Electrode array - Collects the impulses from the stimulator and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve

  4. How does a Cochlear Implant work? Cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. Signals generated by the implant are sent by way of the auditory nerve to the brain, which recognizes the signals as sound.

  5. Who can benefit from Cochlear Implants? Children and adults with significant hearing loss who are not able to gain adequate hearing from hearing aids may benefit from a cochlear implant.

  6. Possible outcomes of Cochlear Implants • Improved ease of listening • Increased confidence in social situations and in the workplace • Increased ease of listening over distances • Greater appreciation of music • Children implanted at an early age develop speech and language • Some people with a cochlear implant are able to use the telephone.

  7. Factors that determines the success of Cochlear Implants? • How long the patient has been deaf • How old they were when they became deaf • How old they were when they got the cochlear implant • How long they have used the implant • How quickly they learn • Intelligence and communicativeness of patient

  8. What are the benefits of Cochlear Implants? • Many understand speech without lip-reading • Many can make telephone calls • Many can watch TV more easily • Some can enjoy music and some may enjoy the sound of certain instruments
