  2. What is a National Household Travel Survey? • Conducted in many countries • Survey of households in Malta and Gozo • Carried out circa every 10 years • Provides comprehensive data on travel and transport patterns • Will facilitate comparison of national trends over last 20 years.

  3. Survey Questionnaire 18,000 households in Malta and Gozo Questionnaire is split into three parts Household information Vehicles information Trip Diary

Standard Data collected in 1989 and 1998 NHTS Profile of each household member Purpose of trip Means of transportation used How long the trip took i.e. travel time Time of day when trip took place Usage of household cars at weekends Distance from household to bus stops Ownership of vehicles in household

  5. Additional Data to be collected in 2010 NHTS Information relating to the bus reform relating to car parking on disabled accessibility to trasnport

  6. Use of NHTS Data Quantify travel behaviour Analyse changes in travel over time Relate travel behaviour to demographic changes Public perceptions of the transport system

Structure Plan 1990 – Report of Survey “A key issue ...the balance to be struck between public and (in the main buses) and private transport ....the use of cars set to continue increasing ” “without action public transport services will decline and fares rise...” “With increased car usage and the congestion that will occur, calls will continue to be made for additional road provision... at best this will only provide temporary relief” “Urban areas abroad have exercised traffic restraint policies ...”
