  1. How to Deal with A Leaking Roof

  2. A leak in your roof can cause panic to set in, but while it is important to act quickly as soon as you spot one, there are some simple things you can do to limit the damage and cost of repairs until a professional roof repair contractor arrives: • Mitigate any moisture damage Not all leaks in a roof will cause a puddle to appear on the floor, instead you may notice some discoloration on the ceiling or a wall, that has been caused by water pooling behind it. If you spot a puddle on the floor, there may be a greater sense of urgency, but equally, if you discover a discolored patch on your ceiling or wall, you should take immediate steps to secure the scene.

  3. Securing the scene If there’s no puddle as yet, place a bucket underneath to catch the drips, or for a steadier dripping or flow of water, clear everything out of the waters path and use a thick piece of sheeting (ideally plastic) to throw over larger items that might get wet, but are too heavy to move. • Do your best to drain the water A sturdy ladder is best if you have one, otherwise a chair will do; puncture the water-damaged patch with a tool such as a screwdriver, to prevent moisture from seeping in and causing your ceiling to sag, or even worse, collapse.

  4. Try to locate the source of the leak If you have an attic, head up there during daylight hours (if it’s safe to do so) and look up to see if you can spot light streaming through from anywhere. If you don’t see any holes or cracks that could be the source of the leak, then you can move on to the water-test method. This involves somebody standing on or at the base of the roof on a ladder (only if safe to do so) and showering the roof with a hose to see if the person inside can spot the leak. However, this step is really only advisable for those with a knowledge of roofs and roof repair, and if you don’t know what you’re doing or can’t safely investigate the leak further, it’s time to call the professionals.

  5. What to do if a professional can’t reach you immediately The best that you can do if a roof repair contractor can’t get to you quickly, is to take temporary measures to protect your roof and your home, such as covering the roof with heavy plastic sheeting (often not possible and may also not be safe to do), or laying a tarp down where the water is coming in. • Seek professional help While spotting a leak might be easy in some cases, other times there might be more complex or less obvious sources of a leak, and only someone qualified and experienced in roof repairs can help you solve the problem and prevent any further damage from occurring to your roof and/or home.

  6. A leaking roof can be a real worry, but fortunately, in most instances you can find a local roof repair company to come and fix the problem within 24 hours. In an emergency situation, such as if the leak is severe or a repairman can’t reach you quickly enough, you can take temporary measures to prevent further damage from occurring, but always take care when dealing with your roof, and only ever go on it if it’s safe to do so and someone else is there to assist you.
