  1. Bulging Bricks; What They Are and How to Get Them Fixed

  2. A common masonry issue, bulging bricks are caused when water seeps through the mortar joints of a wall made from brick or stone, and as the water swells, it puts pressure on the wall. A wall with rusty anchors may also cause the bricks to bulge, as can cracks. Over time, the entire wall will loosen and eventually collapse if bulging bricks aren’t repaired swiftly. Most often seen after a long cold spell, bulging bricks can be extremely detrimental for a wall if left unrepaired, and as soon as you spot any bricks that are bulging, you should ask an experienced masonry contractor to come out and assess and repair the damage.

  3. What are the signs of bulging brick? Any kind of unusual swelling that you spot on a brick or stone wall could mean that it’s suffering with brick bulge, and an assessment from a masonry contractor will soon give you the answer, along with the solution. If signs aren’t quite as clear as a swollen wall, then you might spot that a window has started to look uneven. Common during temperature fluctuations, it’s recommended to keep a close eye on your walls during periods of freezing weather, followed by a thaw.

  4. What can you do to prevent bulging brick? While it’s important that a brick or stone wall be allowed to breathe, it’s just as important that it doesn’t have such big cracks or gaps in it that it starts to let water in without it being able to evaporate when the weather turns dryer. To prevent bulging brick, if you notice several cracks or gaps in a walls mortar, it would be worth having it professionally repointed to stop water from accumulating and ice from forming during the colder months.

  5. What action might a masonry contractor take? It might be the case that your masonry contractor just needs to inject grout behind the wall to increase its strength and fill the gaps caused by the decomposition of the mortar, rather than having to completely redo the whole façade. In the event that the brick is bulging dangerously, a temporary measure such as inserting special screws or metal plates to support the wall, might be required until your masonry contractor can carry out the full work. If the wall is badly bulging however, it will likely need to be replaced fully to make sure it doesn’t happen again, and to prevent it from collapsing.

  6. How long will it take a masonry contractor to repair a bulging wall? While a lot depends upon the extent of the bulge, some badly bulging walls may take a few days to repair; scaffolding will need to be erected and any problematic bricks or stones will need to be cleaned or replaced, along with the reinstallation of any anchors. To know whether your wall is battling a bulge, and to what extent it will need to be repaired, schedule a visit from a local masonry contractor.
