  1. Budget Busting Room Addition Ideas

  2. Expanding your home to accommodate more family members (or even unexpected guests who somehow seem to keep turning up!), is something that many homeowners dream of, and with house prices rising, for many, it’s often the more cost-effective option. If you are on a budget however, a full home expansion project might be out of your price range, making a room addition a much more achievable way of creating extra livable space.

  3. Here are a few ways to add on to your home, without breaking the bank: Finish off the basement This is perhaps one of the most cost-effective ways to add extra space to your home, and if you have an unfurnished basement, you can easily and effectively convert it into livable space, such as a family room, lounge, gym or bedroom. Because the structure of the space already exists, you may only need to fix up the flooring and possibly insulate the walls. In many instances, electrical and plumbing work are required, but even so, converting your basement should be a much cheaper way of adding space to your home than adding on to the existing space.

  4. Convert the attic In much the same way as converting a basement can be a cost-effective way to add space to a home, as can converting an attic. Typically used for families who require an additional bedroom for their children, converting the attic is often a slightly more complex project than a basement conversion, because attics often feature gable slopes or irregular angles, and are located directly underneath the roof.

  5. If you would like to find out if your attic is suitable for a conversion project, you can firstly check the height of the roof; it should be at least 7 feet above the room’s living space. The space will also need to be properly ventilated so that it doesn’t become too hot in the summer, or too cold during the winter months.

  6. Convert the garage If your garage is currently being used just to store junk in, or is completely empty and sitting unused, why not convert it into a garage apartment? The perfect place for older children or other family members to live in, you could also turn it into a home office or gym, according to your needs. Relatively inexpensive because the foundation, walls, wiring and roof are already in place, you may only need to insulate the walls, extend the heating and cooling system to cover the space, and cover the cement floor with a floating system or carpeting.

  7. If your garage has a traditional garage door, you could have French-style sliding doors put in, or turn it into a large window to flood the space with natural light. Don’t forget that to turn the space into a truly livable one, you will need to have a certain amount of plumbing work carried out. Add a sunroom If you’re not able to carry out any of the above ideas to create more livable space in your home – due to budgetary restrictions or lack of available space – then you might be able to add a sunroom instead. Costing as much as $10,000 less than building a new room; sunrooms are made of glass rather than bricks and mortar, meaning that they can provide families on a budget, with some extra space.

  8.
