  1. 4 Signs Your Roof Was Installed Incorrectly

  2. While none of us like to think that our roof may have been installed incorrectly, the majority of homeowners aren’t roofing experts, and wouldn’t even know what to look for when checking their new roof installation. Fortunately, there are 4 ways to check whether your roof is capable of doing its job properly, and if you spot any of them, consult with a reputable, local roofing firm at the earliest: 1.The flashing If it’s safe to do so, you can perform a quick check of the narrow, galvanized steel fitted on your roof to make sure water runs efficiently off the roof; known as flashing, it can be seen near chimneys, vents and skylights. If you see that the flashing is pulling up from the roof, there’s a strong possibility it hasn’t been installed correctly, and may need to be fixed or replaced.

  3. A uniform appearance A visual check can be carried out to determine whether the roof looks uniform from every angle. If you see any patches that don’t match the rest of the roof, it could be that it wasn’t professionally installed, and a quick inspection from an experienced roofing firm will be able to confirm this.

  4. Are the shingles in good order? A good roofer will always take the time to properly nail the shingles on a roof down, which helps to keep them in place and prevent excess overhang. The edges of your shingles should hang over the roof by around an inch to an inch and a half, or around half to three quarters of an inch for drip edge flashing, and if you have excess, this means that they’ve been improperly installed and the shingles could blow off in a strong gust of wind. Water could also drip down into rake or fascia boards, and if any of your shingles are sliding, or hanging askew, they could need to be fixed or replaced due to shoddy workmanship.

  5. Rotten roof decking Rot, anywhere on your roof, is not a good sign, and can actually be extremely dangerous. While this is not necessarily a sign of poor workmanship, it could have been present when your roof was being repaired And the roofer chose not to draw your attention to it, hoping you’d call them back for their services later down the line when your roof began to leak or show more obvious signs of damage. Whatever the situation, if you spot rot anywhere on your roof, you’ll need to address it immediately.

  6. The only way to avoid an incorrect or unprofessional roof installation is to do your research before you hire a roofing contractor, and check that their previous customers are satisfied with the standard of their work. If their attitude is off, they don’t communicate with you properly or they show any signs of unprofessionalism, begin your search again, until you find the right company for you.
