  1. TIPS & TRICKS: THE BLANKET: KEY TO GOOD OFFSET PRINTING The blanket is a real all-rounder in offset printing. It transfers text and graphic elements from the printing plate to the printing stock, which is incredibly demanding when you take a closer look at what all that involves. The blanket must be able to take on colour and dispense it. It also has to distribute the dampening solution evenly, and irregularities in thickness in

  2. the printing stock have to be evened out. The blanket also has to serve as a "damping system." Specific material characteristics determine how well the printed material is released from the blanket (quick release effect), how high quality the replication is in terms of colour and tone, and how strongly the printed image is affected by a mechanical strain. Blankets are made up of multiple layers, and the company subjected these blankets to extensive testing. These tests focused on surface properties (for example, roughness, chemical composition) as well as "damping qualities" (compressibility). In this way, customers can be sure that most blankets provide the best print quality and run stability. Specific material characteristics are decisive in how well the printed material is released from the blanket (quick-release effect) and how strongly the printed image is affected by a mechanical strain. To ensure the blankets perform well, store them in their original packaging and upright. The blankets should not be stored for longer than 24 months since the material can harden and become brittle otherwise. It is advisable to clean the blankets with water before using them for the first time and then use approved washing agents later to avoid damaging the material properties. If irregularities appear in the printed image, it may be due to the wrong processing or packing. For example, slurring or ghosts may result if a run size is too large on plate cylinders or blanket cylinders. A good packing height for blanket cylinders is about 0.002 inches (0.05 millimetres) above

  3. the bearer ring. It is also advisable to affix blankets exactly using torque wrenches. You get the clearest results when you print a full-surface image without a water wash. Excessive dot gain is a sign of flawed processing or packing height and too much pressure. Register problems can also result from blanket, ink and printing stock interactions. Printing blankets with good quick-release effects minimize the adhesive strength and, thus, the negative effects on the register.
