Why is GSHA Involved? • All political parties are looking at social mobility • Grammar Schools are vulnerable to misconceptions • The issue is too readily used to erode confidence in testing • Many grammar schools make an important contribution to social mobility • The record of grammar schools compares very well to that of the top 500 comprehensives but that is rarely acknowledged
Why is GSHA Involved? • To protect the autonomy of grammar schools • To enable grammars to take control of the agenda • To raise political understanding and promote a more informed understanding of FSM matters • To ensure that the needs of all children are considered
The Action Plan • Improving the use of data in informing practice • Supporting schools that wish to have an FSM admission priority • Supporting Schools in developing testing • Spreading and supporting the effective use of familiarisation • Evaluating and spreading best practice outreach work aimed at able children in primary schools
Action Plan • Complex issues are best dealt with through locally determined decision making
Progress- Data • We have worked with DfE to establish that low attainment of FSM in primary schools is the major factor impacting on FSN numbers in grammars • Dialogue is focused on L5 FSM children • The gap for this group is 27% compared to other L5 children • This amounts to just 2oo children a year across all grammars • At least 20% do not apply to a grammar school
Tests • Working with CEM to support schools adopting tests • Developing cost effective familiarisation (with Sutton Trust • Exploring how tests can provide sector wide data to support baseline assessment
FSM Admissions • Working with DfE to develop guidance for schools wishing to adopt some form of FSM admissions priority • 38 schools have either adopted or are consulting on an FSM priority • 59 schools are considering adoption by 2015
Outreach • Working with Sutton Trust to support sharing of best practice ( 2 pilot areas) • Raising awareness of extensive primary links work already being undertaken
