  2. I. Irrationality of joining Group • Single person will probably not make much of a difference. Person will probably receive benefits from the group anyway, e.g. an elderly person joining AARP will benefit from the group’s lobbying efforts whether or not he joins AARP  “free rider” problem  need for groups to offer incentives for people to join.

  3. II. Types of incentives • Material benefits, e.g., newsletters, t-shirts, mugs, magazine subscriptions Purposive benefits, e.g., satisfaction that a person has done a good thing in joining Social benefits, e.g. social benefits of joining
