Turkey Vultures. By: Emma Hoffman. Habitat. Turkey vultures live throughout the U.S. and in some parts of Canada. They are found mainly in lightly wooded areas. Their shelter is in old abandoned barns or sheds. Appearance. The turkey vulture is about 30 inches long.

  2. Habitat • Turkey vultures live throughout the U.S. and in some parts of Canada. • They are found mainly in lightly wooded areas. • Their shelter is in old abandoned barns or sheds.

  3. Appearance • The turkey vulture is about 30 inches long. • It weighs about 2 pounds. • It has a wing span of 6 feet.

  4. Food • Turkey vultures eat carrion.(Birds and animals that are already dead.) • Turkey vultures have to swish their food in their mouth, spit it back out, and eat it again. • Turkey vultures usually search for food during daytime.

  5. Young • A baby turkey vulture is called a chick. • A turkey vulture has 1 to 3 chicks. • The chicks are usually born about 40 days after birth.

  6. Enemies • Some predators of turkey vultures are skunks, owls, hawks ,bobcats ,and snakes. • Turkey vultures protect themselves by vomiting which releases powerful acid that stings the predators.

  7. Communication and Relatives • Turkey vultures communicate by via grunts , clatter , and other noises. • It does not have vocal cords or a musical voice. • One relative in it’s family is the American black vulture.

  8. Interesting Facts • A turkey vulture have a hole on its face that you are able to see through. • Turkey vultures would not make a good pet because they are used to being outside and in the sky.
