  1. FUNdamentals of Astronomy Kayla M. Young

  2. The Universe • The big bang theory is an effort to explain the beginning of the Universe. • The universe contains the totality of entities and processes. http://www.allaboutscience.org/big-bang-theory-video.htm

  3. Galaxies • Large star systems that contain millions, even billions of stars. • We are located in the Milky way Galaxy • There are several types: elliptical, spiral, irregular and barred spiral.

  4. Star Clusters • Globular and Galactic • All the stars in a cluster lie the same distance. • Formed at the same time from the same materials.

  5. Stellar Evolution

  6. H-R Diagram and Stellar Evolution

  7. Planetary Systems • Revolve around star or stars • Contain many celestial objects

  8. Planets and Planet Formation • A • Revolve around star. • Some form in protoplanetary disks

  9. Spectroscopy • Spectrograph • Used to find compositions of celestial objects

  10. How A Spectrograph Works

  11. Astro-Imaging • A way to get information about our universe. • CCD Imager • DSLR Imaging

  12. CCD Imaging • CCD Darks & Flats • How CCD Imager Works

  13. Photo-Processing • Stacking & Aligning Photo • Maxim DL; ImageJ; Photoshop; APT

  14. MONET Telescope • “The Twins”: One Located in Texas One Located in South Africa

  15. Hot Topics in Astronomy • “A Search for Exoplanets in NGC 957” – (Adams 2009) • “WASP-1b and WASP-2b: two new transiting exoplanets detected with SuperWASP and SOPHIE” – (Collier 2007) • 9
