World War I Facts • Began on June 28, 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife by a Serbian terrorist. • Ended on November 11, 1918. • The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) fought against the Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and the United States) • More than 9 million soldiers were killed and 21 million more wounded. • Signed in 1919, the Treaty of Versailles, established post-war borders, founded the League of Nations as an international peace organization and penalized Germany for its aggression. • World War I is also referred to as the World War, the Great War, the War of the Nations, and the War to End All Wars

Causes for U.S. Involvement • The United States wanted to remain neutral but certain events changed that. • German submarine warfare • U-boats torpedoed and sank Allied passenger ships unrestrictedly and without warning; 128 Americans were killed on May 7, 1915 when the Lusitania sank. • Zimmerman telegraph • In February of 1917, Germany’s foreign secretary offers Mexico the return of the southwestern U.S. if they partner with Germany; the telegram is intercepted by the British. • Russian revolution • On March 15, 1917 Czar Nicholas II is removed from the throne in Russia and replaced with a provisional government causing instability in Europe.
