  1. Walk-In C’s, please get the textbooks. Copy the question and answer in sentences: What kinds of geographical features do you predict were present in Ancient India?

  2. Walk-In C’s, please get the textbooks. Copy the agenda for this week.

  3. Answer • There could have been rivers nearby, since we have seen civilizations must have access to clean freshwater for drinking, irrigation, silt, transportation and more!

  4. Walk-In D’s, please get the textbooks. Copy the question and answer in sentences: Why was the Indus River important in the development of a civilization in India?

  5. Answer • The Indus River could provide: • Water for drinking, bathing, and daily life. • Transportation of goods, and meeting new people to exchange ideas about technology. • Irrigation for crops. • Silt for enriching the soil.

  6. GEOGRAPHY OF THE INDUS RIVER VALLEY,IN ANCIENT INDIA

  7. Importance of a River • We will read the story of an ancient earthquake and the effect it had on local people, thousands of years ago!

  8. Learn about Indus Valley Geography. • Read pages 219-221. • Answer the questions on your small sheet in complete sentences, so the ideas make sense later! • When done, try to draw and label the map on page 220 of the monsoon!

  9. Semiarid • Semiarid describes a place, like “Sumer had a SEMIARID CLIMATE”. • Semiarid is NOT a thing. • We can’t say, “Sumer had a semiarid, so it needed water from the rivers.” • What could we say instead?

  10. Map of Asia • Follow along as we mark on the map of Asia where India is located, and where the Indus River Valley was.

  11. Geography of Indus Valley • The Indus River provided water. • The Hindu Kush mountains and the Himalaya mountains kept out invaders, and blocked cold winds, but also made travel out more difficult. • The Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean helped people travel and trade.

  12. Monsoon • A monsoon is a SEASONAL WIND. • Dry winds in winter create a dry climate. • In summer, winds pick up moisture from the oceans, so they create a rainy season. • This helps crops to grow, but can also cause flooding. • Phoenix is the only other place in the world other than India to have a monsoon! 
