  2. Rain Water’s Effect on Your Skin • In popular culture, the idea of couples walking through the rain is often romanticized and made to look glamourous. Dr. Ruth Treiber herself loves titles like “Singing in the Rain”. But as we at Treiber Dermatology, like most dermatologists are a bit torn on the subject. Some experts feel that rain water has negative effects on the skin because of toxicity, while some feel rain water in generally quite pure and therefore have no effect at all. • One of the first things to consider on this topic is your location and the geography of your area. Areas with a higher concentration of vehicles, or industrial factories such as New York City, and its surrounding areas, have higher rates of pollution. These pollutants can dilute the atmosphere and raise the toxicity levels of the rain water. This is the case for the city Rye, NY where Treiber Dermatology is located, as its proximity to NYC, and the level of congestion and vehicles on road cause toxicity in the rain water. • Another thing to consider is that the first rainstorm after a long period of dry weather is often the most polluted and worst for your skin. They often pull all the pollutants from the atmosphere from this dry period and empty them out during the rainy period. These pollutants can cause skin rashes, infections to exposed areas, and in extreme cases cause burns in the outer dermal layer. At Treiber Dermatology many of our patients who suffer from skin issues such as psoriasis and eczema have reported that over exposure to rain at certain times has caused outbreaks and severe itching. • Despite the negative effects of rain exposure, there are a few positives. In certain temperate climates or during rainy seasons, when rain becomes far more frequent, the exposure can actually benefit your skin. Rain water (during long period of rain) is the purest form of non-alkaline soft water, that is water that is low in concentrations of calcium, magnesium and other ions that can erode the skins out layer after prolonged exposure. Soft water is essentially water that is heavily filtered, through natural means, such as at the drainage basin of rivers. Some experts even say that bathing in soft water can help cleanse the skin • At Treiber Dermatology, Dr. Ruth Treiber MD has seen and treated patients with a number of different skin ailments and issues for many years, so if you feel as though you’ve been adversely affected by the rain or sun or any other conditions contact us today!
