  36. Batting Strike Zone THE STRIKE ZONE is that space over home plate, which is between the batters forward armpit and the top of the knees when the batter assumes a natural batting stance. Any part of the ball passing through the strike zone in flight shall be considered a strike The umpire shall determine the batter’s strike zone according to the batter’s usual stance **USSSA Fast Definitions

  37. Batting A foul ball is a batted ball which: Settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and 3rd base Bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory First falls on foul territory beyond first or third base While on or over foul territory touches the person of an umpire, a player or any object foreign to the natural ground

  38. Batting An Out He bats illegally ILLEGALLY BATTED BALL is one Batted Fair or Foul by the Batter when either one or both of his feet are in contact with the ground COMPLETELY outside the lines of the Batter’s Box, or when his foot is in contact with Home Plate, or when the ball is batted with an Illegal Bat. A fly ball is caught. An infielder intentionally drops a fair fly, fair line drive or fair bunt in flight with at least first base occupied and with less than two outs.

  39. Batting An Out Interfering with catcher attempt to field a ball after a 3rd strike Moving backward toward home plate to avoid or delay tag Dropped 3rd strike and leaves field

  40. Batting An Out A third strike is called and caught A dropped 3rd strike at 10F is an out A third strike (in flight) is not caught, provided a runner occupies first base at the time of the pitch and there are less than two outs. Infield Fly

  41. Batting Infield Fly A fly ball, playable by an infielder with: Runners on first and second OR on first, second and third bases with less than two out. The umpire calls “Infield fly if fair and batter is out.” If the hit then becomes a foul, umpire reverses decision. The batter is always out on an infield fly The ball is alive and runners may advance in the hope the fly may not be caught, or they may retouch and advance after the ball is touched. **USSSA Slow Rule 7

  42. Batting Infield Fly If a declared infield fly falls to the ground untouched and bounces Foul before passing first or third bases, it is a Foul Ball. If a fly ball falls to the ground untouched outside the Foul lines then bounces fair, before reaching first or third bases it is an infield fly. Infield Fly is Only Used at Ages 12 and Above

All Base Runners, if they have advanced, must return to the base occupied at the time the incorrect Batter took a position in the Batter’s Box. The next Batter is the Player whose name follows that of the Batter called out for failure to bat. This may even be carried over to the first Batter of the next inning, if the appealed out was the third out. **USSSA Fast Rule 8 **USSSA Slow Rule 7
