What is CREW? • The Centre of Expertise for Waters • A partnership between the James Hutton Institute and all Scottish Higher Education Institutes • Funded by the Scottish Government • Ensuring that water research and knowledge is available and accessible to the Scottish Government and its agencies

  3. What is CREWs role? • Deliver timely and accurate advice to the Scottish Government, Scottish Water and SEPA • Co-ordinate research, analysis and interpretation • Stimulate future innovative thinking • Provide impartial, concise information and readable briefings • Be seen as an honest, trusted and effective hub for knowledge exchange about water from source to sea • Shorten “path length” between, policy, industry and research

Who is CREW? • Led by the James Hutton Institute in a partnership with all Scottish Higher Education Institutions • Contributing partners receive CREW funding to carry out analysis in response to policy and practice needs • The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology (MASTS) at St Andrews University facilitates the involvement of Scottish Higher Education Institutions • SAGES, MASTS, NTI and IHP-HELP Dundee are partner networks • Over 50 academic experts in natural, social and engineering sciences are registered with CREW

CREW Delivery Mechanisms Image: think4photop / FreeDigitalPhotos.net • Call Down and Rapid Response • Access for Scottish Government, SEPA and Scottish Water to rapid, reliable and impartial information from leading experts • For example, short syntheses of existing research, guidance and advice on emerging research and policy relevant issues • Capacity Building Research Projects • Research projects developed with Scottish Government , SEPA and Scottish Water to help deliver medium term knowledge needs • For example, analysis of existing research evidence, systematic review of information, communication material Days to weeks Months to one year

Capacity Building River Functioning and Resilience: River Keeper’s Handbook • Increasing awareness in target audiences • Help to implement the aims of WFD by improving or safeguarding the physical condition of Scotland’s rivers. • Lead to multiple benefits such as increased biodiversity and improved NFM. • A soft bound thirty page colour field guide

Rapid Response An ecosystems services approach to RBMP • Requested by SEPA Workshop to identify key ecosystem services provided by the water environment • Indicators/proxies that could be used in RBMP • Significance of ecosystem service • Number/type of beneficiaries • Data currently available
