  7. Aboriginal Education Policy 2. There shall be a two-way approach to education between Catholic schools and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people where Aboriginal and Other Australians can learn from each other. A two-way approach to education is experienced when the Aboriginal perspectives in the teaching and learning process are given equal importance to that of the Non-Aboriginal culture. 3. Appropriate Aboriginal Studies curriculum, aligned with the Curriculum Framework, shall be developed within the local school context for all children in WA Catholic schools. 9. Catholic schools will develop a reconciliation strategy with their school communities to ensure the vision of reconciliation is realised.

  10. Support the integration of Aboriginal perspectives in the curriculum • assist in planning and teaching Aboriginal language programs • review Aboriginal resources within the school • increase Aboriginal resources within the school

Support the integration of Aboriginal perspectives in the curriculum • provide advice (of a cultural nature) when assisting with the development of teaching programs • ensure involvement of local elders in special events • in partnership with others, arrange and participate  in cultural programs and events in the school

General principles … • Focus on Contemporary as well as Traditional • Challenge attitudes which emanate from generally distorted views of Aboriginal people, culture, history & languages • Counteract the “Us and Them” attitude • If it doesn’t ‘fit’, don’t force it - beware the traps of tokenism and trivialisation
