Replace Obsolete Technology • Mid-90s Consoles • Original CSI Mapboard (1982) • EMS Sun Workstations (Replaced with Dell PCs & 3 Dell Monitors) • Original Incandescent “Digital” displays for Backup Data • Pilot Project - Four Christie Video Cubes replaced • All new wiring (electric and data) • Halon Fire Protection system replaced with FM200 system

Improve Operator Situational Awareness • Improved mapboard (Mauell) - larger, redesigned layout • New Video Wall * Twelve 67” Mitsubishi DLP XGA-resolution cubes (4x3) * Dual Jupiter video processors * AMX Controlled System with Pre-programmed Video Wall Scenarios * 5 Dedicated PCs for PI displays – 5 Specialized PI Displays * Satellite and Cable TV Tuners, DVD inputs

  12. Final Product • The new Control Room went live in mid-July 2008. • Currently working with the main project Vendor and internal staff on final punch list items.

  13. How Operator Input was used • Operators, Grid Control and Office Staff, were interviewed by the Architect and Project Team early on in the process. • The Architect produced a summary of these programming sessions and a design concept came out of those sessions.

  14. Operator Satisfaction • 20 Transmission Switching Operators and Operations Shift Supervisors that work shifts in the new Control Room. • Relatively satisfied with their new room and technology, and have made additional suggestions to help us refine some of the issues with the room.

  19. Suggestions for a Successful Project • Clearly define the project scope • Scope creep is inevitable, but keep it manageable • Assemble a project team that is committed to a successful outcome • Half-time or better commitment is helpful

Suggestions for a Successful Project (cont.) • Define roles up-front to maximize success • Who makes financial decisions, technical decisions, etc. • Who has final decision making authority in case of non-consensus • Visit other Control Rooms to see what works and what doesn’t work for them • Some ideas sound good on paper, but are not as practical to implement

  21. Suggestions for a Successful Project (cont.) • Visit trade shows, potential vendor sites and customer sites to get a good feel for their products, quality, ability to deliver, etc. • Be cognizant of NERC CIP ramifications during design and construction phases • Celebrate successes

  22. Design Consensus • Grid Control staff members and operators were polled when certain key decisions needed to be made during the final design phases. • Grid Control and Grid Operations management helped make certain decisions when it was difficult to reach a consensus.
