Contact with Africans increased when Europeans pushed into Africa.
Missionaries followed the explorers.
Build schools, chruches, & clinics.
Took paternalistic view of Aftricans.
Treated them like children in need of guidance.
Henry Stanley-sent to find Livingstone-"Dr. Livingstone I presume."
King Leopold II hired stanley to arrange treaties with African Leaders.
Belgium caused Britain, France, and Germany to join in the scramble for Africa.
Met in Berlin to divide up Africa.
Took more and more resources.
Rarely allowed Africans a role in government.
Diamonds and Gold in southern Africa.
Britain fought the Boers for territory.
Boerd were descendants of Dutch settlers.
Samori Toure fought the French in West Africa.
Asante Queen Yaa Asantewaa led the fight against the British.
Nehanda of the Shona in Zimbabwe.
Fought the Italians.
