  7. I. Scene I – takes place in Mantua 157. A. Romeo HAS NOT gotten any letters from Fr. Laurence. 162. B. Balthasar brings the news of Juliet’s death to Romeo. 159. C. Romeo wants to leave immediately for Verona. 160. D. Balthasar tries to get him to wait for more news. 161.

  8. E. Romeo 1. plans to go to Verona, 2. kill himself and 3. lie forever in the Capulet’s tomb with Juliet. 164.

  9. F. Romeo needs to get some fast acting poison. 1. The poison is illegal in Mantua. 2. Anyone who sells it can be executed. 166. 3. The very poor and desperate apothecary will probably sell this illegal poison. 167. 4. Romeo tries to buy the poison but 5. the apothecary doesn’t want to break the law. 168.

  10. 6. Romeo points out that the apothecary is already starving to death, so what is there to be afraid of. 169 7. Apothecary needs the money so he sells the poison to Romeo. 170 8. Romeo pays the man 9. Romeo says that the “gold” is a poison that kills men’s souls.

  11. 10. So “gold” is worse than the poison. 11. Romeo says that he is the one breaking the law by selling a deadly “poison.” 171. G. Romeo 1. equates the poison to a cordial. 2. He sees his death as something joyous not evil. 173.

  12. II. Scene 2 – takes place in Verona A. Fr. John was supposed to deliver a letter to Romeo. 174. 1. he did not go to Mantua because 2. he was quarantined in a house. 3. he couldn’t even give the letter to anyone else to deliver. 175.

  13. B. Fr. Laurence realizes that 1. Juliet will wake in 3 hours, so 2. he must go and free Juliet. 177 C. Fr. Laurence plans to send a another letter to Romeo, telling him 1. that Juliet is alive, 2. hiding in Fr. Laurence’s room, and 3. Romeo must come an get her. 178.

Paris tells his servant to hide and watch for anyone who might be coming. 179. 3. The servant signals that someone is coming. 4. Paris hides and waits to see who comes. 180

  17. B. Romeo and Balthasar arrive next. 1. Balthasar is to forget everything he sees and 2. to not interrupt him. 181. C. Romeo tells Balthasar that 1. Romeo is going to open the tomb to retrieve a very important ring. 2. Romeo tells Balthasar to leave or Romeo will kill him. 182.

  18. D. Balthasar 1. doesn’t believe Romeo’s excuse for opening the tomb, 2. he hides and watches. 183. E. Paris sees Romeo enter the graveyard. 1. Paris thinks that Romeo is there to desecrate the tomb. 2. Paris tries to stop him. 186.

  19. F. Romeo says 1. he is there to kill himself. 2. Paris should leave the graveyard and live. 187. G. Paris refuses and fights Romeo. H. Paris’s servant 1. sees them fighting and 2. goes to get the guards. 188.

  20. I. Romeo kills Paris. 189. J. Romeo 1. enters the tomb 2. drinks the poison and 3. dies. 193 K. Fr. Laurence arrives. L. Balthasar tells him that Paris and Romeo fought. 194.

  21. M. Fr. Laurence enters the tomb 1. He finds Romeo and Paris dead. 195. 2. Juliet wakes up. 196. 3. He tries to get Juliet to leave the tomb because the guards are coming. 197. 4. He plans to hide Juliet in a convent. 5. Juliet refuses to leave. 6. Fr. Laurence leaves and hides. 199.

  22. N. Juliet stays with Romeo 1. She finds the vial. 2. She tries to drink from the empty vial. 3. She kisses Romeo hoping that some poison remains on his lips. 4. None of this works.200. 5. She hears the guards. 6. She grabs Romeo’s dagger and 7. stabs herself. 8. [CLIMAX] She dies.201.

  23. O. The Guards arrive 1. They find three dead bodies. 2. The Chief Guard sends another guard to find the Prince and the families. 202. 3. The other guards find Balthasar and Fr. Laurence. 4. They are to be held until the Prince arrives. 203. P. Juliet’s parents and the Prince arrive.

  24. Q. The Prince wants to know what happened. 204. R. Lord Montague arrives and tells them that his wife died of grief because Romeo was exiled. 205. S. Fr. Laurence 1. knows what happened. 2. He also says he is both guilty and innocent for the deaths. 207. 3. He tells the entire story of Romeo and Juliet.

  25. T. Balthasar 1. He fills in the holes in the story. 208. 2. He gives Romeo’s letter to the Prince. 3. The letter confirms everything that Fr. Laurence said. 209.

  26. U. The Prince 1. tells both families that they are responsible for the deaths. 2. Their hate caused this. 3. The Prince also blames himself because 4. He should have enforced the law and stopped the feud. 210.

  27. V. Lord Capulet and Lord Montague 1. See what damage they have caused. 2. They end their feud. 3. Lord Montague will build a pure gold statue of Juliet so that all may know of her love and loyalty. 211.
