  1. Development • Slow consistent growth • Begins with formal school and ends with onset of puberty • Learning independence may cause acting out

  2. Important Accomplishments • Children move away from family towards peers • Children become less self-centered and more goal directed • Sexual tranquility replaces sexual curiosity and preoccupation

  3. Health • Deciduous teeth replaced by permanent teeth • More respiratory infections (around more children) • Immune system usually keeps kids healthy

  4. Growing UP • Vital signs become more like adult (pulse and respirations slow down – Bp increases) • Changes in nervous system permit an increase in cognitive processes • Improved fine and gross motor skills • Sexual energy lies dormant • (latency period) • Peers usually same sex

  5. Erickson • Stage of Industry • Can focus on reality • Gain satisfaction from accomplishments • Friendships very important in a social world • Develop reciprocal relationships with peers • Share feelings and possessions with friends

  6. Piaget • Pre-conventional stage of development • At the end of this stage children have acquired concrete operational thought, organized thinking ability and the ability to understand and follow rules • Arrange objects according to size

  7. Kohlberg • Moral development focused on reciprocity-concern for others • Trust and loyalty is demanded from friends • Child’s moral code learned from parents

  8. School • Major focus during this stage • Emphasis on learning not play

  9. Language • Improves child can communicate effectively • School places emphasis on development of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and sentence structure

  10. Nutrition • Nutrients necessary for bone and muscle growth • Caloric intakes depends on activity level • Food preferences influenced by culture, family and friends • Avoid foods high in animal/dairy fats • Breakfast – Extremely important – 1/3 of daily needs

  11. Sleep • 6 year olds need 12 hours • 11 year olds need 10 hours • Lack of sleep can affect academics and social relationships

  12. Skills • Learn to write, dance and other hobbies • Focus on accuracy and smoothness • Able to take responsibility for own toys and possessions • Likes to earn money for small jobs

  13. Play • Team play • Follows rules and regulations of games • Play in groups of usually the same sex • May be competitive

  14. Health and Safety • Screened for scoliosis • Booster vaccinations • Seat belts • Motor vehicle accidents # 1 cause for death • Excessive violence on TV can lead to night mares and fear
