  1. Important Tips for Choosing a Toothpaste For Your Baby

  2. Choosing a Toothpaste For Your Baby • Baby teeth are prone to decay and cavities. So it’s crucial to ensure they stay healthy, especially that their mouth and jaw are still developing.  • Any problems that occur to their baby teeth can also impact their adult teeth. Even if their teeth are yet to erupt, you can already begin cleaning their mouth with a washcloth.  • As their teeth start to come in, you may also proceed to brush their teeth using age-appropriate toothbrushes. You might be thinking, though, if it's safe to have them use toothpaste.

  3. Here are some Important Tips to Remember When Choosing a Toothpaste For Your Baby:

  4. Look For A Seal Of Approval • You’ll want to ensure that you’re giving your child only safe products. That’s why looking for a seal of approval is a good starting point. • Dental institutions, such as the Canadian Dental Association, issue this for certain dental care products. • These products have been tested safe and effective according to set guidelines. The seal of approval helps consumers like you make informed decisions.

  5. Be Sure It’s Right For Their Age • Once you’ve verified that products are safe and manufacturers are following stringent quality control measures, it’s time to check if they’re right for your child’s age. • Read labels carefully. Babies need safe-to-swallow toothpaste as they’re still unable to spit. • It also helps to choose child-friendly flavors so they'll enjoy brushing.

  6. Check Fluoride Content • Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and one accessible source is toothpaste. Talk to your child’s dentist about the safe fluoride content for your child’s toothpaste and see if products meet it. • You’ll also want to follow the right amount per brushing as too much fluoride is also not good. • A smear of toothpaste should be enough for children below 2 years old.

  7. Try Natural Toothpaste • It’s understandable that you want products free of harsh chemicals for your children. • That said, you may also try natural toothpaste as long as it has a seal of approval or your dentist also approves of it.

  8. Getting children used to brushing at an early age shall help them establish good oral hygiene. • Introduce them to dental care early on and talk to your family dentist about brushing and flossing techniques for your children.
