Personal Background • Born in Spring Grove, New Zealand • On August 30th,1871 • Died October 19th, 1937 • Parents were James Rutherford and Martha Thompson • Went to several schools to later get him into Canterbury College • Became the president of many college societies • In 1895 he traveled to England to study at the University of Cambridge • He held to world record for the distance over which electromagnetic waves could be detected • In 1898 he was the Chair of Physics in Canada • Won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908 • He then married Mary Georgina Newton
Summary of Research The Gold Foil Experiment • Ernest Rutherford fired alpha particles at a very thin gold foil. • Most of the alpha particles went strait through the foil, but some were deflected more than 90° • This proved that there must’ve been another charge in an atom, rather than just negative. • Therefore, he discovered the proton, and then the nucleus. Discovery of Radioactivity • Using thin sheets of metal foil, he discovered alpha radiation and beta radiation • Alpha Radiation is absorbed by a few thousandths of a centimeter of foil • Beta Radiation can pass through 100 times as much foil before it is absorbed
Reflection on Overall Impact on Scientific Community James Chadwick • Discovered the neutron, which added to Ernest Rutherford’s discovery of the nucleus Henri Becquerel • Discovered more in-depth information on radioactivity Marie Curie • Continues to make contributions on radioactivity
Highlight of Major Contributions • During the discovery of radioactivity, he coined the terms alpha and beta • Demonstrated that radioactivity was the breakdown of atoms • Determined the age of the earth, which was more accurate than previous scientists • Discovered the proton, which was ultimately the discovery of the nucleus
