  2. Year 3 Clinical examination skills – led by Ronad Vek (yr 3 student) Teaching on prescribing Leadership and management workshops Year 4 – re-sit opportunity for exams in July Year 5 – clinical skills portfolio introduced in DSS/DSM Developments in 2010-11

  3. Developments in 2010-11 • Teaching on leadership and teaching skills delivered in July 2011 for ‘new’ year 5 • One to one feedback / appraisal for students in year 3-5 • Undergraduate performance programme initiated

  4. Evaluations for DSS/DSM • 84% completion • Acute care module – excellent • Learning outcomes – generic cover all of year 5 • But 98% had feedback (76%-weekly or fortnightly) • Feedback comes in a variety of forms – oral , electronically or written on LEAs • ‘My consultants did not have time to approve my portfolio online, but I got verbal feedback from them at the time of presenting my cases.’ • ‘My consultant looked at hard copies of my LEAs and gave oral feedback on these’.

Clinical skills portfolio 61.7 % thought it was helpful • ‘Seemed a chore at first but in hind sight has meant we have performed and improved in a lot of the skills already.’ • ‘I feel that it has prompted me to undertake more clinical procedures with confidence and monitor how my competency in each skill’ • DOPS in Foundation programme

Year 1- introduction of clinical skills sessions x2 Earlier Clinical attachments – start in December Year 2- extra clinical skills session + manual handling Year 3 – re-introduction of clinical logbook which will be reviewed as part of annual appraisal meeting Inter-professional learning sessions with School of Pharmacy on prescribing issues Developments in 2011-12

  8. Developments in 2011-12 Year 4 – incorporation of Swansea GEM students Year 5 – clinical placements from September ‘Final exams’ – March 2012 ‘Student assistantship’ – April 2012 Elective – May / June Re-sit or first attempt – June 2012

  9. ‘Student assistantship’ – April 2012 ‘A period during which a student acts as assistant to a junior doctor, with defined duties under appropriate supervision’ Students will be allocated to their FY1 team to become involved with all activities

  10. ‘Student assistantship’ Very similar to clinical consolidation but after exams ! Allocated to FY1 post Students should be fully integrated into the team Work with FY1 – on shifts! Shadow and do as much of their role as legal ALS course / blood transfusion competencey

  11. External developments • Situational Judgement tests will be introduced for FY1 application in 2012 • Dec 9th – all year 5 will be involved in a trial • Prescribing skills assessment – BPS / MSC- to be introduced in ?2012/13
