  1. Iodine Isotopes • Chemistry & Radioactivity of Iodine Moataz Mohamed • Radioisotope Therapy (RIT-I131) Rowan Mohamed Mohamed Shady

  2. البطاطس المضيئة ؟؟!!

  3. البرسيم المشع ؟؟!!

  4. I- Chemistry of Iodine

  5. Discovery of Iodine Discovery of Iodine element by Bernard Courtois in 1811

  6. violet-dark gray solid Density: 5 g/cm3 Melting Point: 114°C Boiling Point: 185°C Physical Properties

  7. Atomic Weight: 127 Electrons/shell 2,8,18,18,7 Atomic Properties • 53 Proton • 74 Neutron

  8. Occurrence on Earth

  9. II- Radioactivity of Iodine

  10. Iodine isotopes • Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. • There are 37 isotopes of Iodine Ex: I127, I129, I131 … • The only stable isotope of Iodine is I127.

  11. Radiation & Half-life Period • If radiation is a form of energy ….. Then it can not be created (First Low of Thermodynamics). • So where does it come from???????????! • The source of radiation is the loss in mass (E=MC2) • Half-life period is the time after which the mass will reach half of its initial value. • Half-life period is very important in determining the time needed for the radioactive substance to completely decay.

  12. III- Radioisotope Therapy (RIT-I131)

  13. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] • Definition. • Medical use of IONIZING RADIATION in treatment of Cancer and Malignant cells . • Radiotherapy Vs. Radiology ! ! • History of Radiotherapy : • Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen • Marie Curie

  14. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] • Mechanism of action : • DAMAGE OF DNA.. Both strands ? • Damage is inherited in cancerous cells . • Free radicals ( hydroxyl radicals ) .

  15. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] • Radioisotope Therapy ( RIT ) • INFUSION • MIBG: Neuroblastoma • ORAL IODINE 131: Thyrotoxicosis • RADIOACTIVE GLASS : Hepatic cancer INGESTION

  16. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] FELINE HYPERTHYRODISM • Procedure .. • Advantages .. • Disadvantages ..

  17. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] • Radiation protection. Based on : Time Distance Shielding

  18. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] 1- Reducing the time of an exposure reduces the effective dose proportionally. 2- Increasingdistance reduces dose due to the inverse square law . 3- Addingshielding can also reduce radiation doses .
