  1. An Exploration into Transportation Presented by: Meagan Mullen Booth

  2. Project Basis: • As an employee of UPS, the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services, I was intrigued to research the history of transportation with an emphasis on Urban Development.

  3. Types of Transportation Today: • Many modes of transportation are used today including air, rail, roads, water, cable and pipelines.

  4. In the beginning…. Man mostly traveled by foot

  5. Later…. • Domesticated Animals were used to lessen the burden and some are still used around the world today

  6. Water Water also was a major means of transportation and dates back to ancient times. Some of the earliest people traveled in canoes fabricated from tree trucks. Most vessels used the wind or paddling for forward movement.

  7. Largest Contributor to Transportation Today

  8. ROADS Roads began as mere dirt tracks. The Romans were the first civilizations to use stone to make travel faster. The first highways were built out of macadam which is a ground up coarse material primarily made up of sand, gravel, and crushed stone. In 1805, constructing roads of macadam was considered state of the art. Currently, highways a built from concrete and tar.

  9. Advancements: The demand for more sophisticated means of is transportation was seen through the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.

  10. Environmental Impacts Land Use Large consumption of the World’s Energy Air Pollution Water Pollution Noise Pollution Loss of Life Solid Waste

  11. CONCLUSION As transportation is progressing so is the need to be concerned about the environment. Transportation is changing for the better with many alternative fuel vehicles released in the past decade. Transportation will continue to expand as long as technology progresses. Individual awareness of the environmental impacts will certainly aid us in continuing to demand a greener life for the future. As an employee of UPS, I am glad the company I work for is the global logistics leader of alternative fuel vehicles in their fleet.
