  1. Water Pollution

  2. Water Pollution Occurs In Developed Countries • In developing countries, water pollution is caused mainly from dumping raw sewage into the water supply. • In developed countries, water pollution comes mainly from 3 sources • Municipal pollution • Industrial pollution • Agricultural pollution

  3. Municipal Pollution • Water pollution from cities and towns comes from • Improperly treated sewage • Septic systems • Yard runoff • Storm drains

  4. The San Francisco Bay • The San Francisco Bay has had a problem with pollution for many years.

  5. Industrial Pollution • Factories and hospitals create pollutants that contaminate waterways. • Radioactive waste • Oils, toxic chemicals and heavy metals • Heated water

  6. Agricultural Pollution • Livestock waste – carry harmful disease • Pesticides – toxic to fish • Fertilizers – cause algae to grow quickly and then die and decompose. This decreases dissolved oxygen in the waterway and fish die.

  7. Listen to the following to answer the questions • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phmN-IpR3xw • What is an example of point source pollution? • What is our biggest threat to clean water, at least in Indiana? • What are the common pollutants carried in non-source pollution? • Why does non-point source pollution have the greatest impact on water quality? • How does non-point source pollution end up in our water sources? • What are some of the common causes of non-point source pollution?
