The DICOM Grayscale Standard Display Function (GSDF) provides a calibration standard for both hardcopy outputs and softcopy displays. Consistent Presentation of Images • Provides a solution for: “The Consistency Problem”: • The appearance of grayscale images displayed on different softcopy display devices or printed on different hardcopy output devices has often been inconsistent • Requires calibration of hardcopy output or softcopy rendering devices, using a common standard: “The DICOM Grayscale Standard Display Function (GSDF)”. Modalities, Image Displays, Print Composers, and Print Servers that support “Consistent Presentation of Images” support GSDF calibration. Devices are calibrated independently of each other. • Hardcopy Consistency: Printing w/ PLUT supports creates hardcopy output, that is consistent and visually perceptually linear. Hardcopy produced in any printer will appear consistent. • Softcopy Consistency: Image Displays and Modalities must support DICOM Grayscale Softcopy Presentation State (GSPS), the object for storing and communicating the parameters that describe how images should be presented on a softcopy device. Images displayed on softcopy displays, that are calibrated according to GSDF, and that support GSPS, will appear consistent and visually perceptually linear. • Hardcopy and Softcopy Consistency: The same images when viewed on softcopy displays and when printed with same viewing parameters on hardcopy output will also appear consistent and visually perceptually linear.
