  1. SC Recreational Trails Program Grant Pleasant Ridge Trail System w/ a therapeutic Barefoot trail • “a Federal-aid assistance program designed to help States provide and maintain recreational trails for both motorized and non-motorized recreational trail use.” • 80-20-match program funded by the Federal Highway Administration. • Up to $100,000 in Federal funding available per application.

  2. Location: Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center • Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center is located in Northern Greenville County, above Marietta, along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (Hwy 11 just west of Hwy 25).

  3. Purpose of Grant • To create a mountainous trail throughout the site. • To introduce North America to the “Barefoot” / Sensory trail concept. • Along with use by the general public this trail system will be utilized by youth and adults attending the special needs camp, Camp Spearhead and youths with cancer and other blood disorders, attending Camp Courage.

  4. Benefits More miles of public trails for all to enjoy. Barefoot Trail component will make this trail a “Destination” and uniquely memorable trail. Therapeutic nature of Barefoot Trail is a proven treatment for children with special needs such as autism and developmental delays.

Benefits • The benefits of recreational therapy for individuals with physical or mental disabilities cannot be understated. • Through the SC Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, the Greenville County Needs Assessment and many other reports, trails have been identified as the #1 most requested recreational need. • Children and adult visitors will have brand new, unique experiences in the outdoors that contribute to their overall health and well-being.
