Fumigation of Ag Products • Plant beds • Plant growing containers • Certain crop fields and production systems • Buildings
Fumigation Products available for plant beds • Methyl bromide - 9 to 18 Lb./100 sq. yd • Basamid - 7.5 Lb./100 sq. yd • Vapam - 1.5 gal/100 sq. yd
Fumigation Plant Beds - methyl bromide • Site preparation • work up to a depth of 6 inches • Soil moisture • enough moisture to germinate seed • if not wet enough, irrigate
Fumigation Plant Bed cont. • Soil temperature • 60 to 80 degrees Farenheit • Proper application • New plastic • Proper exposure
Fumigation • Basamid • prepare soil similar to methyl bromide • soil temperature should be above 43oF • after incorporation roll soil to pack it and wet the top with 3/16 - 3/8 inch of water to form a crust or cover with plastic • do not work deeper than you treated
Fumigation • Vapam • temperature above 55 degrees • moist soil • inject to a depth of 5 inches or drench or spray in 40 gallons of water • cover with plastic • remove plastic 21 days before planting
Fumigation Plant containers - • Pots • Styrofoam trays • stack no more than 5 feet high • criss-cross trays • place 1 LB. of Methyl Bromide per 300 cubic ft. ( 500 trays) • use only 1 can per evaporating pan
Fumigation Styrofoam trays cont. • wrap in plastic and seal • expose 24 - 48 hours • allow to air out 48 hours after exposure Controls diseases which liquid dips cannot get to such as sore shin (Rhizoctonia)
Fumigation Cropping systems • Vegetable crops • Tobacco to control certain diseases and nematodes
Fumigation • Vegetable crops • methyl bromide to help control diseases such as late blight • methyl bromide as well as a few other fumigants can be used
